Publications online and in print as one family

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory, EMBL, is Europe’s leading Life Sciences institution and one of the most prestigious research institutions in the world. EMBL wants to continue to attract the best young scientists to come and work at their institutes.
With a new online news portal, scientific results can be shared faster with a broad scientific audience. The website and the existing printed relations magazine were repositioned and designed. Result: a consistent and accessible family of publications.

Up-to-date science

Almost every week, spectacular discoveries are made at the five EMBL locations. The news portal gives EMBL the opportunity to publish these results straight away. A regular e-Newsletter supports the portal.
Alumni, people who have started a scientific career at EMBL, are an important target group. They refer their excellent students to EMBL. Every quarter, a printed magazine is published. It is distributed throughout Europe to employees, alumni and other relations. This magazine on paper contains the less current and ‘human interest’ articles and contains many cross references to the online news portal.

More attractive on all platforms

The EMBL website got an update. Finally, the annual report also received an appropriate new design. Now all publications are a clear family that connect to readers on different platforms. A clear set of colours and fonts, visual language and guidelines for photography, illustrations and infographics will ensure recognizability in the future.

‘The selection criteria were quite challenging as we were looking for a partner with expertise across a wide spectrum of tools, ranging from design and print production to developing digital tools, like websites and newsportals.

What I appreciated the most during the one year collaboration was the professional consultancy and clear focus on the objectives.’

Lena Raditsch, Head of Communications

Balance between content, technology, form and communication

We worked closely with the communication and IT team at EMBL to map out priorities and target groups. Work sessions, content analysis, stakeholder interviews, and competition analysis were part of that process.
